The tragedy in Haiti is still only in the first stage of triage with valiant efforts being made to alleviate the immediate suffering and provide the basics for sustaining human life. However, challenges just as daunting lay ahead for reconstruction. One of these will be the re-establishing of engineering and technology education and professional activities in Haiti.

As a global transnational organization with nearly 400,000 members and as a leader in advancing technology for humanity, IEEE is uniquely positioned to help address these challenges. To this end, IEEE has established the IEEE Haiti Engineering Educational and Professional Development Rebuilding Fund. Individuals may contribute online or donate by check to the IEEE Foundation and mail to to the IEEE Development Office, 445 Hoes Lane, Piscataway, NJ 08854. Donations from OUs (societies, sections, conferences, etc.) will be made using existing governance processes. IEEE will match the first US$50,000 in donations.

Because Haiti is in IEEE Region 9, disbursements of funds will be coordinated through that Region. The IEEE Board of Directors just last November developed a policy that allows IEEE and its Organizational Units to contribute to third-party nonprofit organizations that provide disaster relief. The disbursements may be in the form of grants to academic institutions, charitable organizations, or used for such things as equipment, services, scholarships and classroom and laboratory materials. They also may be used to support programs developed for retraining or other professional activities to help engineering and technology professionals in Haiti.

IEEE continues to encourage donations to other organizations for the immediate relief effort and to help bring some semblance of stability to the lives of the people of Haiti. But we are hopeful that the generosity of our members – and others associated with IEEE — will also add to the long-term development of Haiti through this IEEE fund.

La giornata è stata aperta dal prof. Luigi Dadda (professore emerito presso il Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione del Politecnico di Milano) che ha riepilogato le tappe fondamentali della storia della ricerca informatica a Milano, con una prospettiva verso i futuri “problemi aperti”. Poi la parola è passata al Dott. Carlo Lobrano, vincitore del premio tesi 2009, che ha presentato il suo studio dal titolo: “Studio e Sviluppo di Tecniche di Combinazione nella Soluzione dei Problemi a Due Classi”. Al Dott. Michele Scquizzato è andata invece la menzione d’onore della giuria, per il suo lavoro:, “On Network-Oblivious Stencil Computations”.

Al termine della giornata, un brindisi di auguri: buon compleanno, IEEE!

Il 13 Maggio 2009 IEEE ha compiuto 125 anni, e la Sezione Italia ben 50 !

Seguite la celebrazione dell’anniversario in una serie di eventi a livello italiano e mondiale, che celebrano i successi dell’Istituto nella sua lunghissima vita. Reconfigurable computing: lock and load

The concept of reconfigurable computing has been around since the 1960s, when Gerald Estrin, a computer scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, proposed the concept of a computer consisting of a standardprocessor augmented by array of reconfigurable hardware. In recent years, a lot of work has been done in the so called reconfigurable computing area and the evolution of reconfigurable devices has brought to significantly increase their size, capacity and performance. Reconfigurable systems, while providing new interesting features in the field of hardware/software co-design, and more in general in the embedded system design, also introduce new problems in their implementation and management. This is particularly true for systems that implement self partial reconfiguration.Therefore, the first set of talks will guide you through the basic definition and idea in the reconfigurable computing area, introducing a short historical overview of this field, presenting an overall and comprehensive state of the art of reconfigurable architecture, trying to motivate the reason behind the choice of FPGA as target-architecture. The concluding talk of the day will present the different scenarios (i.e. flexibility, resource lack…) where the reconfiguration can be effective showing also the drawbacks introduced by this new feature. We will show the presence of two different kinds of limits, theoretical and physical ones, trying to highlight possible solutions to both of these.

FPGA technologies description and design flows for SoPC

Nowadays, the most commonly used reconfigurable devices are FieldProgrammable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), employed both as a component of more complex systems (playing the role of a co-processor), and asSystem-on-Programmable-Chip (SoPC), integrating all system components. Within this context, especially interesting is the scenario of dynamically reconfigurable system, in which hardware reconfiguration is carried out without necessarily having to cease execution of those parts of the system that are not involved. The successful deployment of such complex and reconfigurable embedded systems to the market requires the identification, formalization, and implementation of concepts, methods, and tools that are able to ease the development of the software components and the implementation of the system architecture.

Reconfiguration technologies and DRESD contribution

The most recent enhancements of reconfigurable technologies envision the possibility to implement real-world systems capable of adapting their behavior and resources thousand times a second, according to the surrounding environment evolution. This capability would widen the horizons of embedded digital systems applications. These talks will discuss the possibility of implementing a reconfigurable architecture, highlighting pros and cons of different proposed solutions. There have been different proposals to build reconfigurable computing engines to obtain high performance at low cost by specializing the computing engine to the computation task. What seems to be neglected so far is the full exploitation of the ability to partially reconfigure the FPGA at runtime. In such a context the DRESD work will be presented showing how it can answer to some open issues, presenting the current state of its workwith also the future steps.

Profilo dei Relatori

Renato Sala – Renato Sala, laureatosi nel 1987 in Scienze dell’informazione presso l’Universita’ degli Studi di Milano, si occupa della progettazione e realizzazione di componenti software per sistemi real-time e di rete. In questo ambito ha coordinato numerosi progetti internazionali con caratteristiche mission critical nei settori difesa, avionica e spazio. In campo aerospaziale ha sviluppato sistemi software per il controllo degli esperimenti scientifici imbarcati su satelliti di osservazione terrestre ed ha realizzato le componenti software di alcune piattaforme satellitari per la gestione dei dati di bordo, la loro distribuzione e trasmissione verso le stazioni di terra. E’ attualmente impegnato nella progettazione di computer di bordo ad alta integrita’ in campo avionico e spaziale.
Dopo precedenti esperienze didattiche come docente di sistemi operativi nei Master sulla sicurezza dell’informazione e della comunicazione organizzati dall’Universita’ degli Studi di Milano, Renato e’ da tre anni responsabile del corso di “Sistemi in Tempo Reale e Software Safety” presso il Dipartimento di Scienze dell’Informazione della stessa Universita’.

Ferdinando Battini – Laureato in Fisica all’Universita’ di Genova, si e’ sempre occupato di sviluppo software in ambito real-time per applicazioni mission-critical e safety-critical prima in campo navale e poi, soprattutto, in campo aerospaziale.
E’ stato capo progetto software per la gestione dei dati scientifici di bordo dello strumento EPIC (European Photon Imaging Camera) a bordo del satellite ESA/XMM –Newton e in questa veste ha ricoperto il ruolo di Software supervisor del consorzio fra Universita’ di Tuebingen, Max Planck Institut, CEA-Saclay (F) e Università di Leicester (UK), guidato dal Prof. G. F. Bignami, attualmente Presidente dell’Agenzia Spaziale Italiana.
Dopo aver guidato i team di sviluppo software delle Laboratory Facility (Fluid Science Laboratory, Protein Cristalization Data Facility ) ora a bordo della Stazione Spaziale Internazionale, attualmente lavora presso l’industria aeronautica italiana. Si occupa delle relazioni con le autorita’ aeronautiche (ENAC e ARMAEREO) per gli aspetti metodologici e d’ingegneria del software dei processi di sviluppo di applicazioni soggette a certificazione aeronautica.
Ha al suo attivo alcune pubblicazioni nel campo dell’ingegneria del software, ma anche delle reti neurali ed ha condotto il progetto “Clean-Ap” sull’applicazione di metodologie per la misura dell’affidabilita’ del software nel quadro del programma ESSI/Software Best Practice
Dal Novembre 2007 e’ presidente dell’ Italy Chapter dell’IEEE Computer Society.
